I have to confess that this is one of my favorite books! The first time I read this book was during a class at church that my former pastor's wife, Denise, taught. She taught the class for several young mothers in our church at the time that didn't have someone close to guide us along. Boy has it sure made a lasting impact on my life! I have read the book twice since that class in 2012, AND I often refer back to my notes that I took during those sessions.
Elizabeth George is the author and the book is such an easy read, in my opinion. She has several other books in her "... after God's Own Heart" series"; you can see them all HERE.
You would think that becoming a mother is all natural and that you would just instinctively "know". In some aspects that is true, but in Titus 2 Paul writes:
(3) Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, (4) and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, (5) to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.
You see, right there in verse 4, the older women are instructed to teach the younger ladies how to love their spouses and children. One can infer from that passage that knowing how to be a mother is not entirely instinctive. We need to be "taught the ropes" so to speak. While you might not have a woman in your life that can teach you those things, you can still be mentored by godly women like Elizabeth, who write books and share their knowledge/tips!
Okay, so back to the book. I love that her tips are simple & straightforward. One such tip she gives is to nurture your own heart. You can't give away what you don't have, nor can you pour into someone else with an empty cup. So you have to take time to nurture yourself so that you can then nurture your children.
At the end of each chapter, she gives "Little Choices That Reap Big Blessings". Those little choices have been SO HELPFUL to me! At the end of chapter 1, one of the choices is to develop a template for your week. This gives you an idea of what you can do to fine-tune your days so that you can spend more time intentionally pouring into your kids. When I did that exercise, I saw that we were really wasting a lot of time on things that really didn't matter when it came to our family goals. You'll have to read the book to see the rest!
There is also a quiet times calendar in the back of the book, that is handy at helping you stay on track with daily quiet time.
Overall, I love this book, and I would absolutely recommend it to anyone who is a mother or grandmother! The tips given are life-changers & worth more than gold!
Enjoy!!!
