Simple Bible Underlining System

I write and underline in my bible. I am a note-taker by nature, and I look at my bible as my handbook for life. So I tend to make notes in the margins and underline things that stand out to me. This has helped me to remember things that I've learned in various seasons of life.

Almost 8 years ago, a sweet co-worker & friend shared her simple, 4-color underlining system with me, and I loved it! Then a few years later, my pastor's wife suggested adding another color that was specific to me, and so that's how this system came about!

My Bible Underlining System

Blue - Anything that relates to God specifically... names, character qualities, promises, etc.

Green - Instructions or commands to do

Red - Instructions or commands to not do/avoid

Black - Everything else

Pink - Anything that relates to marriage, motherhood, or is female-specific.

It's that simple! When I first started this system, I put a post-it with the key in the front of my bible to help me remember. Now it's almost second nature to remember as I am studying.

Examples:

Blue - God Specific

  • Genesis 9:11 (God's promise after the flood)

  • 2 Chronicles 16:9

  • Mark 8:2 (Jesus' compassion)

  • 1 Thessalonians 4:7, 4:9b, 5:9

Green - Do

  • 1 Thessalonians 4: 11

  • 1 Peter 2:17

Red - Don't

  • 1 Thessalonians 5:15a, 5:19

  • 1 Peter 1:14b, 2:11b

Pink - Pertains to Marriage, Motherhood, or womanhood

  • Proverbs 31:

  • Proverbs 11:16a, 12:4, 14:1, 22:6

  • Titus 2:3-5

  • Ephesians 5:22-24, 32-33

  • 1 Corinthians 7:32-34

Black - Everything else

Enjoy your time in the Word!
