How I study my bible

"Everyone's settled and i am getting to have my quiet time for the day... in a simple and beautiful surrounding. In the midst of all that's going on in life, its a joy to spend time in God's words. I am thanking God today for answered prayers, beauty through the ashes, and for His grace."
I just love the timehop/on this day feature for social media. Sometimes it's fun to look back and see what you were doing on a particular day. The quote above is something I posted a few years ago, and it popped up in my feed recently. As I read those words, I thought about how much life had been lived in the years since then, and how much my life has changed. However, one thing hasn't change that much, and that is how I spend my time with God.
My children don't nap as much as they did back then, but I still tend to follow the same routine, and it has worked well for me! If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right?
Here's what I keep handy when I study...
- my bible, - my devotional or bible study guide - my prayer journal Optional: - my personal journal. - current book I am reading
I keep these things gathered in a small tote beside my sitting area in the corner of my bedroom. It's a simple place, just a small table, my chair, and a blanket, but it's perfect for what I need, and I've been finding my kids tucked away there lately too.
How I study
To start off my quiet time, I first say a quick prayer that God will hep me learn what He wants to teach me today and to help my heart and mind be open to those things.
Then I work through my currently bible study guide (if I have one)... that usually takes about 10-20 minutes.
In seasons where I don't have a study guide, I tend to work through each book of the bible, chapter by chapter using the soap method (Write scripture, write what I observe going on, how can I apply that to my life, and then pray over it.)
After that, I spend time in my prayer journal praying over the needs i've got listed for that weekday. That time varies.
Following that, I will read a few pages in my book, if I have time, or journal about my life.
My quiet time usually lasts anywhere from as little as 15 minutes to over an hour.... just depends on the day, and if my children wake up early. If I am really pressed for time, I focus on just my prayer journal and a devotional book.
